Activity 2.2.1 – My daily water use

My own math based off of months July, August, and September:

  1.  Average # of gallons for July = 1,600 gallons
  2. Average # of gallons for August = 1,000 gallons
  3. Average # of gallons for September = 2,800 gallons
  • Adding the averages up comes to equal 5,400 gallons total for these three months. Once the 5,400 gallons are divided by 3 months, we get a total of 1,800 gallons per month on average
  • Three people counting myself live in my household, so if we divide the total gallons per month on average, which is 1,800 by 3 people it equals to 600 gallons per person
  • Those 600 gallons per person is then divided by 30 days to see how many gallons is used per day. One those two numbers are divided we get a total of 20 gallons per day

Summary

After reviewing how much water my family and I spend on a daily basis, I can say I'm pretty surprised of how much we actually save. I found this assignment very intriguing considering the fact that I never really put much attention of how much water we spend day to day. Or how much its actually costing my family and me. I feel like this activity really opened my eyes and made me cautious about the usage of water in my household. The calculators also helped with making me cautious due to the questions I was getting asked and making me think about. Considering its only 3 women living in my household were savings lots and lots of water and I honestly would've thought water to be a little more expensive than it actually is. I feel like the calculators did calculate a bit more than what my bills report is our usage. According to an Evolve article, the average American household uses about 300 gallons of water per day. Thats almost ten times as much as my households uses! After looking at various stats, the amount my household uses makes me feel better knowing we aren't using as much as an average Americans household, but even then, everyone can save a little bit more than were saving now. So that being said, I'll definitely be working on ways to reduce my water usage.
